9 charged as boy ‘shot and stabbed in broad day’

Nine people have been charged after Abubakkar Jah was stabbed and shot in Coolfin Road, Newham. He was found with stab wounds and later, evidence of being shot, and died at the scene. The Met’s Specialist Crime Command have also linked some suspects to an attempted murder in Tree Road, Newham.

The defendants are as follows:

  • Awadh Saleh, 24, of Plaistow – murder, attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, and possession of a pointed/bladed article.
  • Asad Sharif, 28, of Manor Park, Newham – murder, attempted murder, possession of a firearm, and conspiracy to steal motor vehicles.
  • Zyon Francis, 23, of Plaistow – assisting an offender.
  • Rio Burton-Devine, 24, of Islington – murder, and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.
  • Ahmed Kassim, 30, of Newham – assisting an offender.
  • Makhil Osman, 23, of Newham – assisting an offender.
  • Marcel Burton, 19, of Lambeth – assisting an offender.
  • Jessica Hilton, 22, of Dartford – conspiracy to steal motor vehicles.
  • Dino Hamza, 25, of Newham – conspiracy to steal motor vehicles.

The family have already lost another son to knife crime, Abubakkar’s brother.

“The family are heartbroken. They are devastated, they have lost two sons to knife violence,” Mrs Goodhew said.

“Junior was a sweet, humble, lovely boy. He loved his family, loved life. He was really into football. It is so cruel what has happened. We have to stop young people carrying knives.”

She said the brothers have two sisters who are struggling to come to terms with their loss and added: “The whole family are asking why this has happened to them.

“We have no idea why Junior was attacked, we need answers. He died outside his home where he should have been safe.”
